How To Choose The Best Indoor Bike Trainer for You

by Charles Leland

Indoor bike trainers provide the ability to take a simple bicycle and convert it to a stationary bike, allowing you to maintain your cycling regime even in inclement weather. So how do you determine what the best indoor bike trainer for you would be when their price ranging can range from as little as $75 to over $2000?

Go to most any bicycle trainers website and you will be lead to believe their indoor bike trainer is the best on the market, but surely there couldn’t be so many to hold the title. So just how do you choose the best indoor bike trainer for you?

First, learn of the different types of indoor bike trainers offered on the market – resistance trainers and roller trainers – and determine which would be best to suit your needs and cycling skills. Resistance bike trainers lock your bikes rear wheel in place which offers the rider stability not found with roller trainers as they are free form, and the riders ability to balance is solely up to them.

Most first time buyers of indoor bicycle trainers lean towards resistance trainers simply due to the stability offered by the trainer, which virtually prevents the cyclist from falling off. Wind bicycle trainers are a great option for someone on a budget but who also wants a balanced aerobic workout. Wind trainers tend to be a bit noisy however so another option offered for a reasonable price would be a magnetic bike trainer. These trainers have magnets that keep the wheels from turning, which means you get a much quieter ride. Plus they offer a higher resistance level than that of a wind trainer, making it more appealing to some. Unfortunately magnetic trainers have a tendency to “slip” resulting in a very frustrating and less than satisfying workout.

If you are an experienced cyclist you might want to consider fluid trainers. Although higher priced than the previous two, fluid trainers are very quiet, and offer non-slip resistance. Definitely a workout advantage.

Lastly, there are the electronic indoor bike trainers. Perhaps the most expensive of the batch, electronic bike trainers offer electronic feedback (such as heart rate, speed, cadence, distance “ridden,” etc) interactive software, and endless options for changing up your workout regime to suit most any cycling goal you may set for yourself.

So which indoor bike trainer in the best bicycle trainer for you? Only you can decide, but by determining what your goals and desired results will help to narrow your search down and find the best indoor bike trainer that is the best for you.
